A lower payment can ease your monthly budget, but it does not always mean a cheaper loan. To compare offers, keep the loan amount constant and consider the interest rate, term, fees, and repayment method together.
Example: 10,000 at 6% annual interest
Assuming a fixed interest rate, monthly payments, and no fees or extra payments, a five-year loan has a monthly payment of about 193.33. Total repayment is about 11,599.68, including 1,599.68 in interest.
Reducing the term to three years raises the monthly payment to about 304.22 and reduces total repayment to about 10,951.90, including 951.90 in interest. That saves about 647.78 in interest in exchange for a monthly commitment that is about 110.89 higher. Totals are calculated before the payment is rounded for display.
What does the repayment schedule show?
Each payment consists of interest on the outstanding balance and an amount that repays principal. Under a fixed-rate model, the interest portion generally falls as the balance decreases. The loan repayment schedule shows payment, principal, interest, and remaining balance for each month and can be downloaded as a CSV file.
The tool's schedule does not automatically account for a lender's daily rounding rules, varying payment dates, or early repayment fees. Those details may cause a lender's schedule to differ.
A practical comparison method
- Enter the loan amount, interest rate, and term in the loan calculator.
- Calculate and pin that result for comparison.
- Change the term or rate and calculate again; review the payment and totals, not just the first number.
- Save the scenario on your device or export it to review alongside the lender's offer.
What should you check in an actual offer?
Ask about upfront and recurring fees, required insurance, whether the rate is fixed or variable, and how the annual cost is calculated. A mortgage may involve additional ownership expenses; review the mortgage calculator and its assumptions.
These figures are an educational example, not a loan offer or a recommendation to borrow a particular amount. Choose a commitment that fits your budget and verify the details with the service provider.
