How does this calculator work?

The body needs energy for basic functions and movement. This calculator combines estimated basal metabolic rate with an activity multiplier to estimate maintenance calories.

The formula

BMR = 10×weight (kg) + 6.25×height (cm) − 5×age + sex constant (5 for male, −161 for female). Daily needs = BMR × activity multiplier.

What should you know?

  • An estimate for adults who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. Actual needs can differ substantially.
  • This calculator does not prescribe a diet or treatment. Consult a qualified professional for medical conditions or weight-change goals.

Common questions

How do basal and daily energy needs differ?

Basal metabolic rate estimates energy needed at rest. Daily needs also include an allowance for activity and movement.

Is the result exact for everyone?

No. Body composition, work, health and medication affect energy needs. Use it as a starting point for assessment.

A worked example

  1. For an adult male aged 30, weighing 70 kg and measuring 175 cm, estimated resting energy is 10×70 + 6.25×175 − 5×30 + 5 = 1,648.75.
  2. Choosing the sedentary estimate applies a multiplier of 1.2: 1,648.75 × 1.2 = 1,978.5 calories per day.
  3. The activity multiplier is an assumption, not a direct measurement. The original study’s resting-energy equation is separate from the activity multipliers used by this tool.
  4. This maintenance-calorie example is not a weight-loss prescription or treatment.

This example is separate from the values you entered above.
