How does this calculator work?

BMI is a general screening measure that compares weight with height. It can help describe a weight range, but does not measure body fat directly or determine an individual’s health on its own.

The formula

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters)²

What should you know?

  • Classifications apply to adults aged 20 or older, not children or pregnant people.
  • People with high muscle mass may have a high BMI. The result is not a diagnosis.

Common questions

What is the usual adult range?

BMI from 18.5 to below 25 is generally classified as the healthy weight range for adults. Individual health circumstances still matter.

Can children use these classifications?

Children and teenagers need assessment using age, sex and growth charts. These adult classifications do not apply to them.

A worked example

  1. For an adult weighing 70 kg and measuring 175 cm, convert height to 1.75 meters.
  2. Height squared is 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625.
  3. Divide 70 by 3.0625 to get a BMI of about 22.86, within the adult range from 18.5 to below 25.
  4. This result does not describe fat distribution, muscle mass or overall health. Do not apply adult categories to children.
