How does this calculator work?

The U.S. Navy method uses height and body circumferences to estimate body fat. Use a flexible tape without compressing the skin, and repeat measurements to reduce error.

The formula

Male: 86.010×log10(abdomen−neck) − 70.041×log10(height) + 36.76. Female: 163.205×log10(waist+hip−neck) − 97.684×log10(height) − 78.387. Measurements are converted to inches before calculation.

What should you know?

  • An adult estimate, not a diagnostic measurement or a substitute for professional assessment.
  • For males, measure the abdomen at the navel. For females, use the natural waist and widest part of the hips. Measure the neck below the larynx.
  • Fat distribution and tape accuracy may cause results to differ from clinical or device measurements.

Common questions

Why is hip circumference required only for the female equation?

The female equation uses waist, hip and neck circumferences. The male equation uses abdomen and neck circumferences, so its hip input is hidden and is not used.

Why are some measurements rejected?

The circumference difference must be positive. Results outside 0–75% are rejected as unsuitable estimates for this method.
