How does this calculator work?

Add tax when pricing from a net amount, or separate it from a tax-inclusive invoice. Choose the operation and enter the rate yourself; no country or product rate is selected automatically.

The formula

Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). To extract: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and tax = gross − net.

What should you know?

  • The default rate is zero so you can enter the applicable rate. Verify rates and exemptions with the relevant authority.
  • Does not model compound taxes, input tax deductions or invoice line rounding rules.

Common questions

Why not simply subtract the rate from the gross amount?

Tax is a percentage of the net price. At an illustrative rate of 10%, a gross amount of 110 contains a net amount of 100 and tax of 10, not 11.

Can I calculate several items together?

You can enter the combined amount if all items use the same rate. Calculate items with different rates in separate groups.

A worked example

  1. Assume a gross amount of 115 and a hypothetical tax rate of 15%. This is not a statement of any country’s applicable rate.
  2. Choose Extract tax, then divide 115 by 1.15 to get a net amount of 100.
  3. Tax is 115 − 100 = 15. Subtracting 15% of 115 directly would give the wrong net amount because tax is based on the pretax price.

This example is separate from the values you entered above.
