How does this calculator work?

Statistics summarize a set of values. The mean describes the arithmetic center, the median is the middle value after sorting, and standard deviation describes spread around the mean.

The formula

Mean = sum of values ÷ count. Population variance = sum of (value − mean)² ÷ n.

What should you know?

  • Accepts up to 10,000 values separated by English or Arabic commas or whitespace.
  • Use a period as the decimal separator. Sample standard deviation appears only when there are at least two values.

Common questions

When is the median more useful than the mean?

With extreme values, the median can better represent the center because it is less affected by outliers.

How do population and sample standard deviation differ?

Population variance divides squared deviations by n. Sample variance divides by n−1 to estimate spread in a larger population.
